This date honors General Washington's 1782 orders establishing the Badge of Military Merit, the inspiration for today's Purple Heart. The theme of the event this year will be to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the landings on Guadalcanal, the first major U.S. land Campaign of the War in the Pacific.
